Carpets
Needlefelt: Needlefelts are produced by electrostatic attraction of individual synthetic fibers forming an extremely durable carpet. These carpets are normally found in the contract market such as hotels etc. where there is a lot of traffic.
Tufted: The carpet is produced on a tufting machine using a single-colored or sometimes non-colored yarn. If non-colored yarn is used the carpet will later be dyed or printed with a design. Tufted carpets can be either cut pile, loop pile or a combination of both, and tufted carpets are usually low- to medium-priced.
Woven: The carpet is produced on a loom similar to woven cloth and is a cut pile. Normally many colored yarns are used and this process is capable of producing intricate patterns from pre-determined designs. These carpets are normally the most expensive.
Hardwood Flooring
Solid parquet: Solid parquet is solid wood, the standard thickness of each board is typically 1.5 cm or more; this enables the wooden floor to be heavily sanded numerous times over its lifetime.
Veneers: Veneers are a layer of solid wood, normally 5 mm (referred to as the 'wear' layer) in thickness attached to a base of cheaper wood or plywood; this enables a floor to be sanded and finished using conventional techniques, and can be repaired by light re-sanding.
Laminates: Laminates are the cheapest form, consisting of a faux-wood image applied to a cheap base such as particle board and a clear protective layer applied on top.
Ceramic Tiles
Floor tiles are commonly made of ceramic or stone, although recent technological advances have resulted in glass tiles for floors as well. Ceramic tiles may be painted and glazed. Small mosaic tiles may be laid in various patterns. Floor tiles are typically set into mortar consisting of sand, cement and often a latex additive for extra adhesion. The spaces between the tiles are nowadays filled with sanded or unsanded floor grout, but traditionally mortar was used.
